The Iron “Scolds Bridle” Mask circa 1550s

This mask was used to publicly humiliate and punish, mainly woman, speaking out against authority, nagging, brawling with neighbours, blaspheming or lying.

It was an iron mask used for public humiliation. The victim would have been required to wear the contraption for a duration of time, perhaps hours, where she could not drink, eat, or speak.

Sometimes, it would have spikes that extended into the mouth, making it impossible for the wearer to speak without immense pain.
